Examples of utterances

Utterance Meaning
callsign turn left heading zero zero five The pilot will make a left turn to adjust plane's heading to 5 degrees (degrees increase clockwise, north is 0 degrees)
callsign turn right ten degrees The pilot will make a turn to increase plane's heading by 10 degrees.
callsign climb to flight level one eight zero The pilot will start a climb to FL 180 (18 000 feet)
callsign descend to flight level one zero zero The pilot will start a descent to FL 100 (10 000 feet)
callsign proceed direct charlie alpha papa The pilot will adjust plane's direction of flight to head towards a waypoint CAP
callsign report speed The pilot will report plane's indicated airspeed (different from the one on the radar screen)
callsign reduce speed to two hundred knots The pilot will adjust plane's indicated airspeed to 200 knots (this speed is different from the one on the radar screen)
callsign report passing flight level one six zero The pilot will report when plane reaches altitude 16 000 feet (FL 160). This is not a command to start a climb/descent.
callsign report heading The pilot will report plane's direction of flight (in degrees, increases clockwise from north)
It is possible to chain these commands in one utterance.
There are two types of callsigns:
  • abbreviation of the air carrier's name followed by flight number, e.g. MTL 572
    • You can spell the aircraft carrier abbreviation or
    • you can say the carrier's name according to the following table.
    • The numbers must be always spelled.
    • MTL 572 = mike tango lima five seven two OR mitavia five seven two
  • airplane's registration number, e.g. OEGRO
    • The airplane's registration number can be shortened by spelling it's first letter followed by last two letters
    • OEGRO = oscar echo golf romeo oscar OR oscar romeo oscar
